Third party citations: how AI engines learn who you are.
Ask an AI engine about a brand and it answers from what other people have published, not from the brand's own site. Across 25 million links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, 84% of what the engines read is earned media. This is the evidence on third party citations: how engines resolve a brand name, which interventions measurably move mentions, and which popular tactics documented experiments show backfiring.
Key takeaways
- 84% of everything AI engines cite is earned media, content about you written by third parties. Paid placements and advertorials account for 0.3%. Measured across 25 million cited links, replicated three times over ten months.[1]
- The only published before and after experiment found distributing brand stories through third party publishers lifted AI citations a median 239% in 30 days, across 87 stories and 8 AI platforms.[2]
- Branded web mentions correlate with AI visibility at r = 0.66 across 75,000 brands. Backlinks manage r = 0.22. Mentions beat links three to one on the metric that matters.[3]
- No engine documents a brand database. Google describes its AI answers as retrieval over the search index, and no engine's documentation names a knowledge graph step for brands. Third party pages are the entity layer.[12]
- 61.7% of AI citations are ghost citations: your link appears under the answer, your name never appears in it. Mentions and citations are different metrics and must be tracked separately.[5]

Citations, mentions, and ghost citations#
Three different things get called a citation, and the difference decides what you should measure. A citationis your URL appearing in an answer's source list. A mentionis your brand named in the visible answer text. A third party citation is an engine citing someone else's page that talks about you, and the numbers below show that is the main way engines meet a brand.
The two metrics are mostly decoupled. Semrush analyzed 3,981 domain appearances across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and AI Mode: 61.7% of citations were ghost citations, a link with no brand name in the answer, and only 13.2% of appearances got both the link and the name.[5]
Engines even split on which half they give you. In the same dataset Gemini named brands in 83.7% of appearances but linked only 21.4%, while ChatGPT linked 87% and named just 20.7%.[5]If your tracking tool reports one number for “visibility,” it is averaging two behaviors that move independently.
How engines resolve a brand name#
When someone asks “what is X,” the engine does not look X up in a company registry. Google documents its AI answers as retrieval augmented generation over the ordinary search index.[12] OpenAI documents Bing plus its own crawler behind ChatGPT search. None of the major engines document a knowledge graph or entity database step for brands. Whatever indexed pages say about you, in aggregate, is your identity to the model.
Two experiments show what that means in practice. Ahrefs invented a fictional luxury brand, gave it an official site with a vague denial page, then seeded the web with three fabricated but detail-rich third party stories. The engines sided with the fabrications: specific third party fiction beat vague first party truth, and Perplexity at one point confused the unknown brand with Xiaomi.[7] Detail wins retrieval, and whoever supplies the detail writes your record.
Seer Interactive found the mirror image auditing its own brand: one negative review from 2018, syndicated across five review sites, still surfaced in AI answers eight years later. The model read five copies of one claim as five independent confirmations.[9] Repetition across domains is corroboration to a language model. That is the mechanism third party citations exploit, and the reason a single rebuttal post on your own site does not outweigh them.
The evidence, in numbers#
Three independent datasets, three methodologies, one direction. Muck Rack classified 25 million links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude across 17 industries: 84% earned media, 0.3% paid. The finding held across three editions of the study over ten months.[1]
median lift in AI citations 30 days after third party distribution, the only published before and after experiment (87 stories, 8 platforms)
Stacker and Scrunch ran the closest thing the field has to a causal test: 87 client stories distributed through third party publishers, citation counts measured 30 days before and after. The median lift was 239%, and 64% of the new citations pointed at the publishers' pages rather than the brands' own sites.[2] No control group, so treat it as strong evidence rather than proof, but nothing published contradicts it.
The correlational base agrees. Ahrefs measured 75,000 brands: branded web mentions correlate with AI visibility at r = 0.66, backlink counts at r = 0.22, domain rating at roughly r = 0.3, site page count at r = 0.19, and content length at r = 0.04.[3]Every signal SEO spent two decades optimizing sits at the bottom of that list. Ahrefs' own caveat applies: correlation is not a promise that manufacturing mentions manufactures visibility. Which is why the Stacker experiment matters: it is the one place someone intervened and measured.
Where mentions actually live#
AirOps classified 21,311 brand mentions across 500 commercial queries: 85% came from third party domains, brands were 6.5 times more likely to be mentioned via someone else's page than their own, and roughly 90% of those third party mentions came from listicles, comparisons, and reviews. Within those roundups, 80% of mentioned brands sat among the first three discussed.[4]Placement in other people's comparison content, near the top, is the single densest mention surface that exists.
Community content is the second surface. Reddit alone accounted for 40.1% of AI-cited sources in Semrush's 248,000 post analysis, ahead of Wikipedia at 26.3%.[6] And in the only academic study of real startups, Reddit mentions were the strongest predictor of an engine actually recommending a company on unbranded queries, at r = +0.40, stronger than backlinks and far stronger than any on-page factor.[8]YouTube mentions topped Ahrefs' correlate list outright at r = 0.74, the most under-exploited channel in the dataset.[3]
What backfires#
Writing the roundup yourself does not substitute. Lily Ray's study of Google AI Overviews found self-published “best X” listicles get cited as the source 69% of the time while the publishing brand is left out of the actual recommendation.[10] The engine takes your research and recommends your competitors.
Manufacturing the community signal fails harder. After AI answer engines made Reddit a citation source, brands began seeding threads with planted recommendations; the documented result was moderator crackdowns, with r/Biohackers restricting new posts to weekly megathreads specifically to stop it, and coverage naming the tactic the new link farm.[11]The 0.3% paid share in Muck Rack's 25 million link dataset says the same thing from the other side: engines cite what editors and communities chose to publish, not what was paid to exist.[1]
The honest caveat: recognition is fast, discovery is not#
Third party citations solve two problems at two very different speeds. Recognition, the engine knowing who you are when someone asks by name, arrives quickly: in a monitored experiment with a brand new site, ChatGPT reached stable citation on branded queries by day 17, and Perplexity picked new pages up within 3 days. But 96% of that experiment's visibility stayed on branded queries.[13]
Discovery, being recommended when nobody typed your name, is the hard half. Across 112 real startups, ChatGPT recognized 99.4% by name but organically recommended 3.3%, a thirty to one gap, and on-page optimization scores showed roughly zero correlation with crossing it.[8] The signals that did correlate are the ones in this article: community mentions, referring domains, third party coverage. That is why they are worth the work, and why anyone promising a discovery timeline is selling past the evidence.
