ChatGPT SEO: why is my company not showing up in ChatGPT? 4 fixes

ChatGPT SEO is the work of getting ChatGPT to name your company when a buyer asks. If it does not, ChatGPT usually cannot find you on the pages it reads when it answers. It searches the web, reads a few pages and names the companies on them. Change those pages and the answer changes.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT searches the web, partly through Bing, and names the companies on the pages it finds.[1]
  • 84% of the links AI engines cite are pages other people wrote, so mentions on other sites matter most.[3]
  • Fix four things: search words, crawler access, mentions and answer first pages.

Why is my company not showing up in ChatGPT? Why does it name my competitors?#

Your competitors are named on the articles, reviews and lists ChatGPT reads, and you are not. Knowing your name is not enough. A study of 112 startups found ChatGPT recognised 99.4% of them by name, but recommended only 3.3% when a buyer asked a normal question.[4]

The 4 reasons, and how to fix each#

  1. It searches with other words

ChatGPT rewrites the buyer's question before it searches.[1] Ask it your buyers' questions, open the sources it shows, and use the same words in your page titles and first lines. Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools too.

  2. It cannot read your site

A site that blocks OAI-SearchBot is not shown in ChatGPT search.[2] Check your robots.txt, and make sure your main text is in the HTML without JavaScript.

  3. Nobody else mentions you

This is the biggest one. Get your name on the review sites, lists and forums ChatGPT already cites for your question.[3]

  4. Your page hides the answer

Put the answer in the first two sentences. Pages with sources, quotes and statistics were up to 40% more visible in AI answers.[5]

Why is my company not showing up in Copilot, Gemini or Perplexity?#

For the same four reasons. Each engine uses its own sources, so you can be first in one and missing in another. Ask the same questions in each engine, three times, and fix the gaps per engine.

How one agency got named first in 7 days#

On 19 September 2026, ChatGPT did not name the Kyiv agency TapTap in any of 9 runs of its buyers' questions. We rebuilt its site around those questions and fixed its robots rules and sitemap. On 26 September, ChatGPT called TapTap “the clearest specialist I found”, and Google's AI Overview named it first. The screenshots are in the TapTap case study.
